Virkon Disinfectant: Ideal applications and products available ©

Virkon disinfectant is an effective and tested tool for infection control.

Virkon disinfectant is not only safe and easy to use but is also available as a series of products.  Due to the versatility of Virkon disinfectant and the variety of products available, it is popular for a range of applications.

Virkon Disinfectant features and how it works

Virkon disinfectant is an incredibly useful hygiene tool, particularly for busy environments that have regular spills or need to be regularly disinfected.  Viruses can be eliminated quickly and safely using Virkon with minimal scrubbing / cleaning.

The active Virkon solution is created when adding water to Virkon powder or tablets.  All Virkon products come with a colour strength indicator which can help signify use life.  The use life of the active solution after mixing the tablets or powder with water is 5 days.

Virkon both cleans and disinfects simultaneously so there is no need for pre cleaning.  Virkon disinfectant is safe to use and does not cause skin irritation / corrosion.  However, it is advisable to wear gloves and protect eyes when using all cleaning / disinfection solutions including Virkon.

Virkon’s effectiveness at disinfection has been proven by an independent, international testing program.  Virkon Disinfectant has an unequalled spectrum and is effective in challenging all major pathogens.  It is proven successful in eliminating 99.9% of microorganisms within a 10 minute period and is effective against a wide range of viruses and fungi such as:

  • Candida
  • HIV
  • Hepatitis B
  • Polio
  • Mycobacteria
  • Staphylococci
  • Streptococci
  • Proteus
  • Pseudomonas

Virkon works by utilising an oxidising system which destroys pathogens.  This oxidising system is based on potassium monopersulphate which disrupts the physical structure of bacteria by oxidising proteins in the bacteria’s cell walls.

Individual Virkon Disinfectant Products

Virkon disinfectant is available as a range of products tailored to suit different needs and applications.

Virkon can be purchased as a powder or in tablet form.  Both of these are packaged in suitable containers to make them easier to use.

Virkon Powder: Virkon powder is available in several different types of packaging to suit individual needs.

Virkon 500gm Powder (shaker bottle)

One of the Virkon powder forms that is offered is the 500gm powder shaker bottle.  This bottle is suitable for using direct on body fluid and other spillages due to the ‘shaker’ style of the bottle.  This makes it ideal for use in hospitals, clinics, care homes or anywhere that requires direct, rapid disinfection.  This bottle of Virkon powder can also be used as part of a regular cleaning routine.  This 500gm bottle of Virkon powder makes up 50 litres of Virkon Disinfectant when mixed with water.

Virkon 50gm Powder (packet)

Virkon powder is also available in a 50gm packet / sachet.  This packet is ideal for single use or for when the person disinfecting only wants to mix a small amount of solution.  Industries that don’t use Virkon on a large scale may also prefer to use the 50gm packets.  Virkon packets may be suitable for use in laboratories, small clinics and for domestic use where disinfection may be on a smaller scale.  One 50gm packet of Virkon powder will make approximately 5 litres of Virkon solution when mixed with water.

Virkon tablets: Virkon tablets are offered in two different sizes / containers and are often used in conjunction with spray bottles.

Virkon 5g tablets

Virkon 5gm tablets are available in 2 different quantities: 10 x 5gm tablet container and 50 x 5gm container.  The tablets are ideal for spray bottle application and to quickly wipe down surfaces.  Virkon spray bottles complete with official Virkon labels are available separately and are perfect as containers for solution made with these tablets.

Virkon tablets are suitable for busy environments and those that wish to save time.  The tablets are convenient as you do not have to measure them out like the powder and spray application is quick and effective.  Places such as nurseries, schools, clinics, dentists and veterinaries would benefit from using the tablets.  Each 5gm tablet makes approximately 500mls of solution.  The tablets in the 10 x 5gm tablet container make up to 5 litres of disinfectant and the tablets in the 50 x 5gm container makes up to 25 litres of disinfectant.
